Chapter 4 · Practice 1 of 3
Listen to the whole question, clarify if needed and take a moment
Why it matters
Many weak answers are good answers to a different question. Before answering:
- Listen to the end without interrupting.
- Clarify if the question is unclear: "Do you mean the sync between phone and server, or between two phones?" The University of Sheffield's viva guidance says assessors will not penalise you for asking for clarification and are not deliberately asking trick questions.
- Pause for a few seconds to think. Silence feels long to you and normal to the panel.
- Answer directly first, then add detail: "Yes, it handles conflicts. The later edit wins, and we log the overwritten value."
Keep answers short. If the examiner wants more, they will ask.
Do
- Ask for clarification when a question is ambiguous
- Give the direct answer first, then detail
Avoid
- Starting to answer before the question is finished
- Long answers that drift away from the question
