Final Year Project Presentation and Defence Best Practices

Chapter 5 · Practice 4 of 4

Be open about libraries, templates and AI tools you used

From Explain your own code and decisions

Why it matters

Panels may ask which parts you wrote and which came from libraries, templates, tutorials or AI tools. Answer plainly and match what your report says.

  • Libraries and frameworks: name them and explain what they do for you.
  • Templates or starter code: say what you started from and what you changed.
  • AI assistance: if your rules allowed it, describe how you used it, consistent with any disclosure in your report.
  • External help: name anyone outside the team who contributed, such as a mentor or a lab technician.

The ACM Code of Ethics asks computing professionals to be honest and trustworthy and to respect the work of those who produced the ideas and artifacts they build on. Using well-known tools is normal engineering. What matters is that you are honest about it and can explain how everything you submitted works.

Do

  • Keep what you say consistent with your report's disclosures
  • Explain what each library does for you

Avoid

  • Claiming you wrote code that came from a template or tool
