Final Year Project Proposal Best Practices

Chapter 1 · Practice 2 of 4

Match the idea to what your team can learn in the time you have

From Choose an idea worth a year of your time

Why it matters

A final year project should stretch you, but it has to finish. List what the idea needs (for example a mobile client, a backend API, a trained model, an embedded device) and compare it honestly with what your team already knows.

One or two cells in the risky column are normal and make the project interesting. If most of the idea sits there, either narrow it or pair it with a supervisor who works in that area. Remember the project also competes with your other courses, exams and job applications in the final year.

Do

  • List the skills the idea needs and who has them
  • Keep at most one or two genuinely unknown areas

Avoid

  • An idea where every major part is new to the whole team
