Chapter 5 · Practice 4 of 4
Say in the proposal how you will know the project worked
Why it matters
Decide the evaluation now, not at the end. For each objective, write how you will check it:
- Functional: test cases for each must feature, run before every evaluation.
- Performance: a measured number, such as response time under a stated load, or model accuracy on held-out data.
- Usability: a short test with real users from your stakeholder list, with tasks and a simple questionnaire.
- Comparison: for a research project, the baseline you will beat or match, and the dataset you will use.
Planning evaluation early changes how you build: you collect the right data, log the right events and recruit test users in time. Leaving it to the final month usually means the results chapter is thin.
Do
- Write one evaluation method per objective
- Plan when and with whom user testing will happen
Avoid
- Deciding how to evaluate after the system is built
