Tech Lead Best Practices

Chapter 1 · Practice 4 of 4

Plan your week around both maker time and lead time

From Define the role

Why it matters

The role pulls in two directions: deep technical work needs long uninterrupted blocks, while leading needs you to be available. Without a plan, interruptions win and your own technical work disappears.

A simple pattern:

  • Block focus time on your calendar for a few mornings a week.
  • Batch reviews into two or three slots per day so authors are not waiting long.
  • Hold office hours or a regular slot where anyone can bring questions.

Tell the team the pattern so they know when you are reachable.

Do

  • Publish when you are available for questions

Avoid

  • Being available for everything, all day, every day
