Switch into tech: Self-taught, no degree

Sefism.

Chapter 03

Money, risk and the people around you

How to fund a switch without betting everything on it: runway, keeping income, a possible pay reset and honest conversations at home.

Runway

What
How many months you could cover essential costs with savings and any other income if you earned nothing from work.
Why
Runway decides whether you can study full time, how long a search you can survive, and when to take a stepping-stone job.
Example
Savings of 4,800 with essential costs of 800 a month gives six months of runway, before any emergency.

Watch out

Counting runway against all your savings with no emergency buffer, then panicking at month three.

Keeping your job while switching

Also called keeping your job, keep your job

What
Learning and building on evenings, weekends or reduced hours while keeping your current income until you have skills, proof and ideally an offer.
Why
It removes the money pressure that pushes people into bad courses or bad first jobs, and it lets you try internal moves at your current employer.

Watch out

Quitting to "go all in" before testing whether you can study steadily for three months.

Pay reset

What
The chance that your first tech salary is lower than what you earn now, especially if you are experienced in your current field.
Why
Knowing it early lets you plan the drop, target bridge roles that value your experience, and compare offers on the next three years rather than the first month.

Watch out

Rejecting every junior offer because it pays less than your current senior salary, then staying stuck.

Decision checkpoints

Also called plan B, checkpoint

What
Dates set in advance when you review progress honestly and decide whether to continue, adjust the target role or pause, based on evidence rather than mood.
Why
They stop a switch from drifting for years, and they make it safe to stop or change direction without feeling you failed.
Example
Month 3: finished the first course section and built one project? Month 9: three projects and ten conversations? If not, change something.

The family conversation

Also called family conversation

What
An honest talk with the people affected by your switch about the time it takes, the money involved, the risk and how they can help.
Why
Family support protects study time and reduces pressure. In many families a career change also needs explaining, especially away from a stable job.

Watch out

Hiding the plan until you quit, which turns a reasonable decision into a shock.

Sustainable pace

What
A weekly study load you can keep for a year alongside work, family and rest, rather than a sprint you abandon after three weeks.
Why
Consistency beats intensity in long learning. Eight steady hours a week for a year beats forty hours for one month.

Watch out

Planning 25 hours a week on top of a full-time job and caring duties, then feeling guilty when it collapses.
