Glossary

Every concept in this sheet, plus the smaller terms it uses. Select a concept to open its card.

A
Actors, MainActor and Sendable
An actor protects its state so only one task touches it at a time.
async/await and Task
An async function can suspend while waiting.
C
Closures and capture lists
Closures are functions without a name that capture surrounding values.
D
Declarative UI
You describe what the screen should look like for the current state, and the framework works out what to change on screen.
E
Enums with associated values
Swift enums can carry data with each case, such as .loaded([Post]).
Error handling with throws
A function marked throws can fail; callers use try inside do and catch.
H
Hot reload and previews
Tools that show code changes in a running app or an editor preview within a second or two, without rebuilding the whole app.
L
Lazy lists
A lazy list only builds the rows currently on screen, plus a few ahead, and recycles them as you scroll.
let, var and type inference
let declares a constant and var a variable.
O
Optionals and unwrapping
An optional String? either holds a value or nil.
P
Platform design guidelines
Material Design 3 is Google's design system for Android, and the Human Interface Guidelines are Apple's rules for iOS.
Protocols and extensions
A protocol lists requirements a type promises to meet, like Identifiable or Codable.
R
Rows, columns and stacks
The basic layout containers place children horizontally, vertically or on top of each other, with spacing and alignment options.
S
Safe areas and screen sizes
Safe areas, or insets, are the parts of the screen not covered by the notch, status bar, camera cutout or gesture bar.
Structs versus classes
Structs are value types: assigning one makes an independent copy.
Swift collections
Array, Dictionary and Set are value types: assigning one copies it, cheaply, with copy on write.
Swift Package Manager
Apple's dependency manager, built into Xcode.
T
Text input and forms
A text field shows a value from state and reports every change back.
Theming and dark mode
A theme defines colours, typography and shapes in one place.
V
View modifiers
A modifier such as .padding() or .font(.headline) returns a new view that wraps the original.
