Coding with AI tools

Stage 4 · Lesson 4 of 7

Catching invented and outdated APIs

Reading and reviewing AI code

The most common AI error is a call that does not exist in the version you use: an invented method, a renamed option, a removed flag or a configuration key from an older release. It often looks perfectly in style with the library. Your editor catches many of these: hover over each unfamiliar call, and if there is no definition, a red underline or a deprecation warning, open the official docs for your version.

Run the and the tests, which fail fast on missing functions. For command-line flags, run the tool's --help. Pin the version in your prompt when it matters: "we use React 19 and Next.js 16".

Common trapassuming a call works because it looks like the library's style, then discovering at runtime that it never existed.
