Coding with AI tools

Stage 4 of 10 · 7 lessons · ~2 weeks

Reading and reviewing AI code

Review every AI change like a colleague's pull request: read the whole diff, run a fixed checklist, explain it back, catch invented APIs and unrequested changes, and use AI review only as a second pass.

Start: Reading every diff

Lessons· one lesson for each topic, in this order

  1. 1Reading every diff
  2. 2A review checklist for AI code
  3. 3Explaining it back in your own words
  4. 4Catching invented and outdated APIs
  5. 5Spotting unrequested changes
  6. 6Committing in small, reviewed steps
  7. 7AI review as a second passOptional

Do this

  • Write your review checklist and keep it next to your editor.
  • Review ten AI changes with it and log what each review caught.
  • Reject at least one change for unrequested edits and redo it with a tighter prompt.
  • Look up every unfamiliar call in one change in the official docs.
  • Commit before each AI task and stage only reviewed lines.
  • Explain one AI change aloud to a friend or in a pull request description.

Also worth your time

Before moving on: Your written review checklist, used on ten real AI changes, with a short log of what it caught, what you rejected and one case where you could not explain the code until you read the docs.

Tauseef's advice
Review is the job now. When code arrives faster than you can type it, your value is in deciding what is right, and the only way to decide is to read. If a diff is too long to read properly, the task was too big: reject it and ask for less.
