Automation for clients

Stage 1 · Lesson 3 of 8

Data mapping between steps

How automation works

means choosing which output of an earlier step fills each input of a later one. The email from the form goes into the 's email field. The first name goes into the greeting.

Each earlier step hands over its data as , and you pick fields from it. Every tool lets you do this visually, by clicking or dragging. Each also has an language: short formulas that change the data on the way, such as trimming spaces, lowercasing an email or joining first and last names.

Most real bugs live in mapping. So always run a step with real sample data and read the result before moving on.

Common trapmapping from a test record that has every field filled in; real data has blanks, extra spaces and unexpected formats.

Practise

  • Call real APIs by hand, see status codes and headers, before you build anything around them

  • Get a throwaway URL and see exactly what an app sends in a webhook

Keep handy

  • A map of API concepts, from REST and auth to rate limiting, to check what you have not met yet

  • Clear chapters on OAuth flows and scopes for when "Connect your account" stops being magic
