Choosing the right database

Stage 2 · Lesson 3 of 6

MySQL, SQLite and SQL Server: when they fit

Relational databases: the sensible default

is not the only good . is widely used behind websites and PHP apps such as WordPress, is cheap on almost every host and is a fine choice if your team or framework already uses it. SQLite is a whole database in a single file inside your app, with no server at all.

It is ideal for mobile apps, desktop tools, tests, prototypes and small sites with one writer at a time. Server is common in companies built on Microsoft and .NET, and Express edition is free with size limits. The core SQL is shared, so skills carry across. Choose by what your host, framework and team already support.

Common traptreating SQLite as a toy: for a single-user or read-mostly app it is often the simplest correct answer.
