Stage 1 · Lesson 1 of 7

Domains and DNS records

Web basics for site builders

A is the name people type, such as example.com. You rent it yearly from a company called a registrar. (the Domain Name System) is the internet's address book: it says where that name points.

You will mostly touch four kinds of DNS records. An A record points the name at a server's number, its . A CNAME record points it at another name.

An MX record says which servers receive the domain's email. A TXT record holds text used to prove ownership and to protect email. To connect a client domain to WordPress hosting, Shopify or Webflow, you add exactly the records the platform lists.

Changes do not appear everywhere at once, because computers keep old answers for a while before asking again. Every launch depends on this, so learn it before any platform.

Common trapreplacing the whole (the full set of records) when moving a site and deleting the MX records, which silently breaks the client's email for days before anyone notices.
