Stage 2 · Lesson 7 of 7
A little scripting
You do not need to be a software engineer for a first defensive role, but small scripts save hours. Learn enough or Bash to read a log file, pick out the lines you care about, count events and print a short report. Learn enough PowerShell to ask Windows for information.
needs more: you must read and write code in at least one language the teams you support use. Scripting also helps you understand what a tool is really doing, instead of trusting its output blindly. Start with problems from your own lab, such as counting failed logins in a log.
Common trapcopying scripts from the internet and running them without reading them, which is also how people infect their own machines.
