Stage 1 · Lesson 1 of 8
Distributions and which one to use
Linux comes in many versions called distributions, or . Each one bundles the Linux (the core of the system) with a , a set of default tools and its own release schedule. LTS and are the usual choices for beginners.
Debian is common on servers. Arch suits people who want to build their system piece by piece. LTS stands for long-term support: these releases get security updates for years, which is what you want on a machine you rely on.
Most commands in this roadmap work the same on every distro. What changes is mainly the package manager and a few defaults.
Common trapdistro hopping every week instead of learning the shell, which is the same on all of them.
