Stage 2 · Lesson 5 of 6

async/await and Tasks

C# for real work: LINQ, collections, generics and async

Most server work is waiting: for , an HTTP call or a file. async methods return a Task or Task<T>, and await pauses the method until the work finishes, freeing the thread to serve other requests in the meantime. That is why ASP.NET Core can handle many requests with a small .

Name methods with an Async suffix and return Task, never async void, except in event handlers. Start independent calls first and await them together with Task.WhenAll, so three 200 ms calls take about 200 ms, not 600. Async is not the same as parallel: it is about not blocking while waiting, not about using more CPU cores.

Common trapforgetting await: the method carries on before the work is done, and its exception disappears.

Practise

  • Keep going on the C# track: the later exercises lean on LINQ, generics and dictionaries

  • Solve easy array and hash map problems in C# to make collections and LINQ automatic

Keep handy

  • Return to the official C# modules on collections, LINQ and async when something is unclear
