Stage 2 · Lesson 2 of 6
DVC: versioning data next to Git
(Data Version Control) is an open source command-line tool that versions large files alongside Git. Since late 2025 it is maintained by lakeFS as an independent open source project. dvc add moves a file into a local and writes a small .dvc pointer file that you commit to Git.
dvc remote add points at storage such as S3, Google Cloud Storage, Azure or an SSH server, dvc push uploads the data, and dvc pull fetches the version that matches your current commit. Checking out an old commit and pulling brings back the exact data it used.
Common trapcommitting the pointer file but forgetting dvc push, so teammates and CI get a pointer to data that exists only on your laptop.
