Stage 1 · Lesson 2 of 8
Why notebook code breaks in production
Notebooks are good for exploring and bad for running things repeatedly. Cells can run out of order, so the result on screen may depend on a cell you deleted. Hidden state, such as a variable set an hour ago, makes the same notebook give different answers on another machine.
Paths point at your laptop, secrets sit in cells, and preprocessing is copied by hand into whatever serves predictions. None of this can be tested or scheduled. The fix is not to ban notebooks but to move anything that must run twice into functions in a package, and let the notebook import them. Keep the notebook for charts and experiments.
Common trapcopying cells into a serving script, so training and serving code slowly drift apart and nobody notices until predictions go wrong.
