Stage 1 · Lesson 9 of 9

Gradle and dependencies

Kotlin fundamentals

Android projects are built by a tool called , set up in script files such as app/build.gradle.kts. You declare libraries in a dependencies block, as in implementation(libs.retrofit) for the networking library. New projects keep all versions in one version catalog, gradle/libs.versions.toml, so every module uses the same versions.

Libraries come from Google's Maven repository and Maven Central. Learn the difference between implementation (used by the app) and testImplementation (used only by tests). Use the , a bill of materials that keeps Compose libraries compatible with each other.

You do not need to master Gradle. You only need to add and update a dependency and read a build error.

Common trapcopying an old Groovy build.gradle snippet into a Kotlin script file.
