Virtual University of Pakistan(VU)

Federal public university established in 2002 that teaches entirely online through recorded lectures and its VULMS learning system, with exams at campuses across Pakistan. It offers BS Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology and Data Science, computing associate degrees and an MS in Computer Science, with BS admission on eligibility alone and no entry test.

Where to apply

Add to the Virtual University of Pakistan page

This page is only as good as what students who have been through it are willing to share. Universities publish the rules, but not how the test felt, where merit closed or how long the wait for a list was. One account from someone who applied is worth more than anything I can find online.

What are you adding?

This decides how the claim is labelled on the page. Only someone representing the university can produce an “official” label, and I check that separately.

Year and month.

Comma separated topics, not the questions themselves.

Dates, the test format, where merit closed and how long each step took are the parts nobody else publishes.

How admission works

  1. 1
    Online application

Create an account from the Admissions tab on vu.edu.pk, then complete programme selection (study location, programme and preferred city and campus), personal and educational information, the optional need-based scholarship and credit transfer forms, and upload scanned documents.

  2. 2
    Document verificationBachelors (BS)

The form is scrutinised against the programme's eligibility criteria. For BS and associate degrees there is no entry test; an eligible, complete application is verified and a fee voucher is issued.

Entry tests they consider

Who can apply

  • BS Computer Science, Software Engineering, IT and Data Science: at least 50% in Intermediate (HSSC), A level or equivalent with Mathematics. Students without Mathematics at intermediate must pass 6 credit hours of mathematics deficiency courses in the first two semesters. A level, Deeni Asnad and foreign qualifications need an IBCC or HEC equivalence certificate.

  • BS-Lateral: a 2-year associate degree in a computing discipline from an HEC-recognised institution with at least CGPA 2.0, plus 50% at intermediate (45% for associate degrees completed before Fall 2023). BA, BSc or an unrelated associate degree does not qualify.

  • MS Computer Science: 16 years of education in a relevant discipline with at least CGPA 2.5 or first division, 50% in the VU entry test, and no more than four deficiencies among nine core CS courses (algorithms, architecture, networks, programming, data structures, databases, operating systems, software engineering, automata). Applicants must reside in Pakistan.

VU is not a campus university: you study online and sit exams in person. Undergraduate admission is on eligibility, with no entry test and no merit list, so any applicant who meets the marks requirement and pays the fee on time is admitted. MS Computer Science is the exception, with an entry test and limited seats. A 5% quota is reserved for persons with disabilities in merit-based programmes.

Computing programmes and course outlines

VU's programme pages say BS Computer Science is aligned with the HEC Undergraduate Education Policy, and its schemes of study label courses with the HEC categories (general education, computing core, domain core, domain electives, field experience and capstone project). No NCEAC accreditation statement for a VU computing programme was found, so none is recorded.

How to actually get in

  • No entry test for BS. If you have 50% in intermediate with Mathematics, apply online, upload your documents and pay the voucher on time; that is the whole process.
  • Pay before the deadline. Admission is granted only to eligible candidates who pay by the due date. The Fall 2026 window ran from 6 July to 30 September.
  • No Maths at intermediate? You can still join but must clear 6 credit hours of deficiency maths in your first two semesters.
  • Pick your exam city carefully. Teaching is online, but you sit mid-term and final exams in person at a VU campus, so choose one you can reach.
  • Budget per credit hour. From Spring 2026 BS tuition is Rs. 1,000 per credit hour, and CS lab work adds Rs. 2,150 per practical credit hour.
  • Already have a computing associate degree? The BS-Lateral route finishes the BS in about 63 credit hours.
  • MS Computer Science is fall only and needs 50% in VU's entry test.

About Virtual University of Pakistan

The Virtual University of Pakistan was established by the Federal Government in 2002 under the Virtual University of Pakistan Ordinance 2002 as a distance learning university. Teaching happens through recorded video lectures, available online and on TV, and the VULMS learning management system, with graded quizzes, assignments and discussion boards during the semester and mid-term and final exams sat in person. The head office is in Islamabad, and the university reports a network of over 200 campuses (its own and private partner campuses) that handle exams and student support.

The Department of Computer Science and Information Technology says it has offered BS Computer Science since 2002. It now runs 4-year BS programmes in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology and Data Science (133 credit hours each), BS-Lateral entry versions for students with a computing associate degree, two-year associate degrees in Computing, Computer Networking, Data Science, Database Management System and Web Design and Development, one-year diplomas, and an MS in Computer Science with Software Engineering, Computer Networks and Databases specialisations.

The university also runs DigiSkills.pk, the national online freelancing and digital skills training programme.

Every claim here is labelled

Admission dates, tests, merit formulas and fees change every cycle, and not all of it is published in one place. Every claim here is labelled with its source and how well established it is. Treat the university's own admissions page as the last word, and tell me when something is out of date.

Nobody pays to be listed here, and nothing on this page is sponsored. Universities cannot buy a higher position or have a profile removed on request, though I will correct anything that is wrong.
