Chapter 1 · Practice 1 of 4
Accept that AI tools are now a normal part of the job
Why it matters
Several large, independent surveys agree that AI use among developers is now the norm rather than the exception:
| Source | Finding |
|---|---|
| Stack Overflow Developer Survey 2026 | 73% of respondents who use AI coding assistants or agents use them daily |
| Google DORA 2025 (nearly 5,000 professionals) | AI adoption among software development professionals reached 90%, with a median of two hours a day working with it |
| GitHub Octoverse 2025 | Nearly 80% of new developers on GitHub use Copilot in their first week |
The practical meaning: knowing how to work well with AI tools is now part of the baseline skill set, in the same way version control became one. Refusing to learn them is a career risk; so is assuming they are all you need.
Do
- Treat AI tool fluency as a baseline skill
- Check the latest edition of each survey once a year
Avoid
- Basing career decisions on a single viral post about AI
