Chapter 1 · Practice 2 of 4
Notice that developers trust AI output only when they can check it
Why it matters
Usage is high, but trust is conditional:
- Stack Overflow 2026: 48% of respondents trust AI only for low-risk, easily verifiable tasks.
- DORA 2025: 24% report a great deal or a lot of trust in AI, while 30% trust it a little or not at all.
- Stack Overflow 2025: the top frustration, cited by 66%, was AI solutions that are "almost right, but not quite", and 45% said debugging AI-generated code is more time-consuming.
This is the core of the opportunity. If generated code is often almost right, the developer who can tell exactly where it is wrong, quickly, is the one teams rely on. The rest of this guide is about building that ability.
Do
- Build skills that make AI output checkable: tests, reading code, debugging
Avoid
- Assuming widespread use means the output is reliable
