Chapter 2 · Practice 2 of 4
Treat freelance platforms as one channel, and learn their rules
Why it matters
Upwork, Fiverr, Toptal and Contra each work differently. On Upwork you send proposals to job posts; on Fiverr buyers find your gigs; Toptal screens freelancers before matching them with clients; Contra lets you show a portfolio and invoice clients. Each has its own fees, payment rules and limits on contact outside the platform.
Before relying on one:
- Read its fee page and work out what you keep from each payment.
- Read its payment protection rules. On Upwork, fixed-price work is protected only when the milestone is funded before you start and you submit through Upwork's own flow.
- Read its off-platform rules. Upwork treats sharing outside contact details before a contract as circumvention, and Fiverr bans taking business off Fiverr.
Platforms are excellent for first reviews and for clients who already trust the platform. Over time, aim for a mix, so one platform's policy change cannot remove most of your income overnight.
Do
- Read the fee, protection and off-platform pages before your first job
- Keep platform work and direct work both alive
Avoid
- Moving a platform client off the platform against its rules
