Final Year Project Presentation and Defence Best Practices

Chapter 1 · Practice 1 of 3

Read the timing rules and the marking form before you plan anything

From Know what each evaluation assesses

Why it matters

Departments publish how presentations run and how they are marked. The University of Lahore's Islamabad campus guidelines, for example, give each group at most 30 minutes for the final presentation, split roughly equally among members, and assess both the group and each individual on their own presentation and project work. FAST's evaluation forms grade projects from Excellent to Not Accepted and require evaluators to justify a Not Accepted grade.

Find out for your own evaluation:

  • Total time, and how much is presentation, demo and questions.
  • Who sits on the panel: supervisor, internal evaluators, external examiners.
  • Whether each member is marked individually.
  • What must be submitted or brought: report copies, code, hardware.
  • The marking form or rubric, if it is shared.

Plan the presentation so that every criterion on the form is clearly covered. If the form has a line for testing, make sure testing has its own slide.

Do

  • Get the marking form or rubric if it is shared
  • Plan so every criterion has a visible slot

Avoid

  • Planning slides before knowing the time limit and format
