Final Year Project Presentation and Defence Best Practices

Chapter 7 · Practice 1 of 3

Run at least one full mock defence with tough questions

From Rehearse, prepare the day and follow up

Why it matters

A mock defence is the closest thing to the real event. Ask your supervisor, a senior or friends from another team to act as the panel.

Make it realistic:

  • Same time limit, same slides, same laptop and the live demo.
  • Panel members read your report first and prepare questions on weak points, decisions and results.
  • Include at least one "show me the code for this" request and one "why didn't you use X".

Sheffield's viva guidance recommends practising your overview aloud, especially the opening 30 seconds, ideally in front of others, and having a friend read your report and suggest questions. Sheffield Hallam suggests recording yourself and listening back. Afterwards, write down every question you struggled with and prepare a better answer.

Do

  • Run a full timed mock with the real demo
  • Write down and work on every question you struggled with

Avoid

  • Only rehearsing the slides without questions
