Final Year Project Presentation and Defence Best Practices

Chapter 2 · Practice 3 of 3

Rehearse with a timer and cut until it fits with room to spare

From Build slides that support you

Why it matters

Running over time is common and costly: the panel may stop you before the demo or the results. Sheffield Hallam's viva guidance suggests practising telling the story of your work within a time limit; for a presentation, do it with an actual timer.

A simple process:

  1. Write the slides, then rehearse once with a timer without stopping.
  2. Note which slides took longest and whether the demo fitted.
  3. Cut slides or merge them until you finish with a minute or two to spare.
  4. Rehearse again, including handovers between team members.

As a rough guide, one slide per minute of speaking is often comfortable, but your own rehearsal is the real measure.

Do

  • Rehearse the whole presentation with a timer
  • Finish rehearsals with a minute or two to spare

Avoid

  • Adding slides after the last timed rehearsal
