Chapter 5 · Practice 3 of 3
Cite figures, datasets, code and tools, not only papers
Why it matters
Credit applies to everything you did not create yourself:
- Figures and tables taken or adapted from a source: add "Adapted from [4]" or "Source: (Khan & Ali, 2024)" in the caption. Redrawing a diagram does not remove the need to credit it.
- Datasets: cite the dataset itself, with its creator and version, and respect its licence.
- Code: credit libraries, frameworks and any code you adapted from tutorials, repositories or answers online, in the text or an appendix. Keep the licence notices the code requires.
- Templates and assets: UI kits, icons and images, according to their licences.
If you are unsure whether something needs credit, credit it. An extra citation never costs marks; a missing one can.
Do
- Credit adapted figures in their captions
- Cite datasets and adapted code with their licences
Avoid
- Redrawing someone else's diagram without credit
