Personal Branding Best Practices for Developers

Chapter 2 · Practice 3 of 4

Pick a focus you use at work or will use for years

From Choose a focus

Why it matters

The easiest brand to maintain is one built on work you are already doing. If your job is mostly Django and PostgreSQL, a focus on Rust game engines means finding separate time for both the learning and the writing.

Check a candidate focus against three questions:

  1. Do I work with this now, or will I soon? Daily use gives you a steady stream of real problems to write about.
  2. Will it still matter in a few years? Fundamentals and widely used tools age better than this month's framework.
  3. Do I actually enjoy it? You will spend many evenings on it.

If a focus fails all three, it will not last past a few months.

Do

  • Build your focus around problems you meet at work or in study

Avoid

  • Choosing a niche only because it seems popular right now
