Personal Branding Best Practices for Developers

Chapter 2 · Practice 4 of 4

Name the people you want to reach

From Choose a focus

Why it matters

Every post, project and profile is easier to write when you know who it is for. Name the audience as specifically as you can:

  • "Junior developers learning backend for the first time."
  • "Engineering managers hiring for frontend roles."
  • "Small business owners who need a simple booking app."

The audience shapes everything else. Juniors want clear explanations and starter code. Hiring managers want evidence of judgment and results. Clients want outcomes and prices.

Write the audience next to your positioning line and check new work against both. If a post would not help the people you named, it may still be fine to share, but it is not building the brand you chose.

Do

  • Write down one or two audiences next to your positioning line

Avoid

  • Writing for "everyone", which usually means no one in particular
