A
Async communication
Working so that people do not need to be online at the same time: questions written with full context, decisions documented, updates posted, and replies within an agreed window.
E
Employment type in a listing
The words that show how you would be engaged: full-time employee, employee via employer of record, independent contractor, fixed-term contract or through an agency.
L
Legal entity
A company registered in a specific country, able to employ people there under local labour, tax and payroll law.
Listing red flags
Signs a listing is poor or fake: no findable company, pay far above market for little experience, vague duties, contact only through a messaging app, a free email address and pressure to reply today.
Location-based pay
A pay policy where the same role pays differently depending on where you live.
Location-restricted remote
A remote role limited to people living in certain countries or regions, shown as "Remote (US)", "Remote, EU only" or a list of countries the company can hire in.
R
Readiness self-audit
A short written check of your technical level with evidence, a writing sample, your async habits, the overlap you can give and your setup, each marked ready, nearly or not yet.
Remote work setup
The equipment and backups that keep you online through a working day: a reliable connection, a backup such as a mobile hotspot, power backup where outages are common, a headset and a quiet place for calls.
Remote-first vs remote-friendly
A remote-first or all-remote company runs everything online and in writing.
S
Self-management
Planning your own day, breaking work into finishable pieces, tracking what you promised and raising blockers early, without anyone checking on you.
T
The remote screening bar
The extra things remote employers look for on top of technical skill: clear writing, independence, reliability, sensible overlap hours and a track record of finishing work without supervision.
Time zone overlap
The hours of your working day that coincide with the team's working day, used for meetings, pairing and quick questions.
Time zone requirement
A rule in a listing about when you must work, such as "UTC-5 to UTC+1" or "at least four hours overlap with Eastern Time".
W
Work authorisation
Your legal right to work in a given country.
Written English for remote work
Short, specific messages with the main point first, the details a reader needs (versions, errors, links) and a clear ask.
