Chapter 2 of 9 · 3 checks · 2 min
Niche and title
Your title and niche decide whether you appear in the right searches and whether a client clicks. Make them specific.
Choose a niche you can show proof forMust
Why it matters and how to check
A niche is a type of client plus a type of problem: "React Native apps for restaurants and delivery", "Shopify custom apps and checkout features", "Python data pipelines and dashboards for small analytics teams". On a marketplace with thousands of similar developers, a niche is how you stand out and how clients searching for that problem find you.
Choose one where you have at least one or two projects, even personal ones, and where clients have budget.
Check it: you can write "I help X do Y" for your profile, and you have at least one portfolio piece that matches it.
Do
- Look at recent job posts in your niche to confirm demand
Avoid
- Listing every technology you have ever touched
Write a title that names your specialism and resultMust
Why it matters and how to check
The title is the first thing clients see in search results. "Full Stack Developer" says nothing about what you do best. "React Native Developer: Restaurant Ordering and Delivery Apps" or "Shopify Developer: Custom Apps and Checkout" tells a client immediately whether you fit.
Upwork's help notes that the Title and Introduction fields cannot contain URLs or website addresses, including domain-style text, and the Next button will not work until they are removed.
Check it: your title names a technology and a type of problem or client, contains no URLs, and reads clearly on a phone screen.
Do
- Use the words clients use in job posts
Avoid
- Titles like "Expert Developer" or "Senior Software Engineer" alone
