About this checklist

A freelance platform profile checklist helps because most developer profiles on Upwork, Fiverr and similar marketplaces look the same: a generic title like "Full Stack Developer", an overview that starts with years of experience, a portfolio of tutorial projects and a rate picked to be the cheapest. Clients scrolling through dozens of near-identical profiles pick the one that clearly solves their problem, and they rarely pick the cheapest one for important work.

This checklist goes through a profile from top to bottom, then through the habits that turn a profile into income. The first chapter helps you choose platforms by how they work and what they charge. The next chapters cover your niche and title, the overview and photo, the portfolio, and setting rates with fees in mind. The later chapters cover winning first jobs without underpricing, writing proposals, earning reviews and badges such as Upwork's Job Success Score and Fiverr's levels, and the platform rules that can get an account suspended if ignored.

The checks are based on each platform's own help centre and pricing pages, checked in October 2026. Platforms change fees, ranking and rules often, so each check tells you to confirm the current version on the official page before relying on it. The checklist works whether you are a student taking your first gig, a working developer adding freelance income, or a full-time freelancer from Pakistan, India, Egypt, Kenya or anywhere else serving clients worldwide. For running each client project once you win it, use the Freelance Developer Client Checklist.

Common questions

Which freelance platform is best for developers?

It depends on how you want clients to find you. Upwork suits developers who write strong targeted proposals, Fiverr suits clearly packaged services, Toptal suits experienced developers willing to pass a demanding screening, and Contra suits building a portfolio and invoicing your own clients. Start with one or two and do them well.

How much does Upwork charge freelancers?

Upwork's help centre says the freelancer service fee ranges from 0% to 15% per contract and is shown before you submit a proposal or accept an offer, then locked for that contract. Proposals also cost Connects, which vary by job. Check Upwork's current help pages for details.

How much does Fiverr take from sellers?

Fiverr's help centre describes a 20% fee on each completed order, including tips, with earnings available after a clearance period of 14 days, or 7 days for some seller programmes. Check Fiverr's current help pages before pricing your gigs.

How do I get my first job on Upwork with no reviews?

Pick a narrow niche, write a specific title and overview, show a few relevant portfolio pieces, and send tailored proposals to small, well-defined jobs from clients with verified payment methods. Deliver them exceptionally well and ask for feedback promptly.

Can I share my WhatsApp or email with a client on Upwork or Fiverr?

Not before a contract on Upwork, which treats sharing outside contact details before a contract as circumvention. Fiverr prohibits sharing contact details to do business off Fiverr. Breaking these rules can get your account suspended and loses you payment protection.

What is a good Job Success Score on Upwork?

Upwork lists a Job Success Score of at least 90% among the criteria for its Top Rated badge, alongside other requirements. The score is based on client feedback, how contracts end and long-term relationships, so ending contracts properly and keeping clients happy matters.
