About this checklist

A freelance developer client checklist saves you from the problems that cost freelancers the most: vague scope, unpaid invoices, endless revisions and arguments over who owns the code. Most of these are avoidable if you run every client project through the same steps, from the first message to the final handover, instead of starting to code as soon as someone says yes.

This checklist follows a freelance project in order. The first two chapters cover qualifying a client and writing a clear scope, because most disputes start there. Later chapters cover the written proposal and estimate, contract essentials (scope, IP ownership, payment terms, revisions and termination), deposits and milestones, getting paid by international clients, communication and change requests, delivery and handover, and the red flags that should make you walk away.

The advice draws on platform help centres, government guidance for freelancers and the self-employed, the US Copyright Office and freelancer organisations. It applies whether you freelance through a platform like Upwork or work directly with clients in Pakistan, the Gulf, Europe or North America. Laws and tax rules differ by country, so treat this as a practical checklist, not legal or tax advice, and check anything important with a qualified local professional.

Common questions

What should a freelance web developer contract include?

At minimum: the scope and what is out of scope, deliverables and deadlines, price and payment schedule, late payment terms, number of revisions, who owns the code and when it transfers, confidentiality, and how either side can end the project. Use a template from a freelancer organisation and get legal advice for large projects. This is not legal advice.

How much deposit should a freelance developer ask for?

There is no fixed rule. Many freelancers take a deposit before starting and bill the rest by milestone, so they are never owed for more than one stage. Choose an amount you would be comfortable losing on the first milestone if the client disappeared.

Who owns the code a freelancer writes for a client?

It depends on the contract and local law. In the US, the Copyright Office explains that a contractor's work is a work made for hire only in specific categories with a signed agreement, and software is not one of them, so contracts usually include a written assignment. Many freelancers transfer ownership after full payment.

How do freelancers in Pakistan get paid by international clients?

Common routes are freelance platforms, bank transfers and payment services. Fees, exchange rates and availability change, so compare what you actually receive on each provider's current pricing and check your local tax and banking rules. US clients may ask for IRS Form W-8BEN.

How do I handle scope creep as a freelance developer?

Write a clear scope with an out of scope list, then answer every new request with a short written change request that gives the extra cost and the new deadline. Start the extra work only after the client approves it in writing.
