A collar that classifies animal behaviour from motion data and flags changes that often precede illness, transmitting over long range radio and running for months on one battery. Power budget is the dominant constraint and shapes every other decision.
Non-Intrusive Smart Energy Meter
A clamp-on energy monitor that measures household consumption without any wiring changes and shows live cost and usage. Safe by design because a current transformer clamps around a cable rather than breaking into it.
Distributed Air Quality Sensor Mesh
A mesh of low cost air quality nodes covering an area at higher spatial resolution than official monitoring, with long range radio linking to a single gateway. The interesting problems are radio range in real environments and keeping cheap sensors trustworthy over months.
Wearable Fall Detection for Independent Living
A wrist worn device that distinguishes a genuine fall from sitting down heavily or dropping the device, and raises an alert with a cancellation window. False alarms are what get these devices taken off and left in a drawer, so that is the metric to optimise.
Cold Chain Monitoring for Vaccine Transport
A tamper-evident temperature logger for medical shipments that records continuously through areas with no connectivity, and produces an integrity-protected record of every excursion. The record has to be trustworthy, which makes this as much a security project as an embedded one.
Soil Moisture Driven Irrigation Controller
An irrigation controller that waters based on measured soil moisture and forecast rainfall rather than a timer, with a documented measurement of water saved. The engineering that matters is what happens when the network, the sensor or the power fails.
