Tamper-Resistant Dynamic Payment QR Display with Voice Confirmation for Small Shops
Printed payment QR stickers at small shops can be covered with a fraudster's sticker, and fake payment screenshots fool busy shopkeepers. Build a small counter device with a screen that shows a fresh, signed QR for each sale, and a speaker that announces confirmed payments only after the shop's own account receives them. Threat-model the attacks, build the device, and test it against sticker swaps and fake confirmations.
TinyML Sound and Vibration Anomaly Detection for Backup Generators
Shops, clinics, mosques and offices rely on diesel or petrol backup generators during power cuts, and they fail at the worst moment. Build a small sensor node that listens to a generator's sound and vibration, learns its normal behaviour on the device itself with a tiny anomaly detection model, and sends an alert when something sounds wrong, without a cloud connection or a data scientist.
Offline AI Tutor Hotspot on a Raspberry Pi for Schools Without Internet
Many schools have a few phones or tablets but no reliable internet. Build a Raspberry Pi box that runs a small open language model and a curriculum-grounded retrieval system completely offline, creates its own Wi-Fi network, and lets students ask questions about their textbook in Urdu or English from any browser. Teachers control what content is loaded and see which topics students ask about most.
Crop Disease Photo Triage That Knows When to Ask an Agronomist, on Budget Android Phones
Most crop disease apps give a confident answer for every photo, even blurry ones, the wrong crop or a disease they never saw in training. Build an on-device classifier for a few crops that abstains when unsure and sends those photos to an agronomist review queue; the agronomist's answers become new training labels. The project measures how much accuracy improves when the app is allowed to say "I don't know".
Acoustic Early Detection of Red Palm Weevil Larvae in Date Palm Trunks
The red palm weevil kills date palms from inside, and by the time a tree shows symptoms it is often too late. Build a low-cost clip-on sensor that records vibrations in the trunk, an embedded classifier that separates larval feeding sounds from wind, traffic and birds, and a dashboard for farm managers. Test it on recordings from infested and healthy trees with an entomology partner.
Home Sound Alerts on a Vibrating Wristband for Deaf and Hard of Hearing People
Build a small listening device that recognises important household sounds, such as the doorbell, a pressure cooker whistle, a baby crying or a smoke alarm, entirely on the device, and sends a distinct vibration pattern to a wristband. Deaf and hard of hearing people often miss these sounds, and phone-based features are limited to a fixed list of mostly Western sounds. The project lets users teach the device sounds from their own home.
Single-Point Pressure Sensor for Household Water Leak and Tap Detection
Build a device that screws onto one tap in a home, samples water pressure hundreds of times a second, and works out which fixture is in use, how much water it used and whether there is a hidden leak. The research behind the idea was done on pressurised mains plumbing; most South Asian homes run on rooftop tanks with low gravity pressure. Finding out whether and how it works there is the core of the project.
Plug-In Voltage and Outage Logger for Mapping Neighbourhood Power Quality
Build a plug-in device that records every power cut, voltage dip and surge at a home or shop, and combine many of them into a public map of power quality by neighbourhood. Households across Pakistan and South Asia buy stabilisers and lose appliances to bad voltage, but have no record to show the utility. Independent, timestamped measurements turn complaints into evidence.
Load-Shedding-Aware Server Shutdown and Restart Orchestrator for Small Offices
Build a service that watches a small office's UPS or solar inverter battery during power cuts and shuts down servers, virtual machines and containers in the right order before the battery runs out, then brings everything back and checks it is healthy when power returns. Offices in Pakistan running a local server through daily load shedding lose data and hours to dirty shutdowns. This makes each outage boring.
Solar Tube-Well Pump Run-Time and Groundwater Level Logger for Farmers
Build a low-cost, brand-agnostic logger that retrofits onto a farm's solar water pump and records solar power, pump run-time, water pumped and the water level in the well, then shows daily water delivered and how far the water table falls and recovers. Solar pumps make pumping almost free to run, which can drain aquifers unnoticed. Farmers get fault alerts and water records; researchers and water agencies get groundwater data they rarely have.
Hill Torrent Flash Flood Early Warning with LoRaWAN River Gauges and Village Sirens
Build a network of solar-powered river level gauges placed upstream on a hill torrent, linked over LoRaWAN to a gateway that detects dangerous rates of rise and sounds sirens and sends SMS warnings to villages downstream. Flash floods in northern Pakistan and similar valleys arrive within an hour or two of heavy rain upstream. Even 20 to 40 minutes of warning can move people out of the way.
Urdu Handwriting Practice App for Children with Stroke Order and Letter Form Feedback
Build a tablet and phone app where young children trace and write Urdu letters with a finger or stylus, and the app checks stroke order, direction, dot placement and the joined forms letters take at the start, middle and end of words, then shows exactly what to fix. Teachers in crowded classrooms cannot watch every child form every letter, and bad habits set early. The technical core is recognising and comparing handwriting as a sequence of strokes, not as a finished image.
Cattle Weight Estimation from Phone Photos for Small Dairy Farmers and Livestock Buyers
Build a phone app that estimates the live weight of a cow or bull from a side photo and a printed reference marker, records weight over time and shows a likely range rather than a single number. Small farmers rarely own a scale, so they guess weight for feeding, medicine doses and sale, and buyers at livestock markets do the same. The project trains a lightweight keypoint and regression model and validates it against a weighbridge with a veterinary or livestock farm partner.
Home and Small Office Network Device Audit on a Raspberry Pi
Build a Raspberry Pi box that a family or small office plugs into their router to find every device on the network and check it for the common problems: default passwords, open remote access, outdated firmware and unencrypted traffic. Results come as a short plain-language report with fixes for each device. It is aimed at cheap cameras, routers and smart plugs that nobody ever updates.
Signed, Staged OTA Updates with Automatic Rollback for ESP32 Device Fleets
Build a self-hostable update system for small fleets of ESP32 devices that signs every firmware image, rolls updates out in stages, checks device health after each update and rolls back automatically when something goes wrong. Small IoT companies in Pakistan and elsewhere ship devices with no safe way to fix bugs in the field, or with update schemes that a single bad build can brick. The project applies the security ideas behind automotive update frameworks at a scale a startup can run.
Offline Urdu Voice Commands on a Microcontroller for Home Lights and Fans
Build a wall-mounted controller that recognises a small set of spoken Urdu and Punjabi commands, such as turning a fan or light on and off, entirely on a microcontroller with no internet and no cloud. Older people and people with limited mobility often cannot reach switches easily, and cloud voice assistants need connectivity and understand Urdu poorly. The core is a tiny neural network trained on a dataset you record yourselves.
Offline Bird Call Survey App for Wetland and Wildlife Field Teams
Build an Android app that records bird calls during a structured field survey, identifies likely species on the phone with an open bird sound model, filters suggestions to species expected in that region and season, and sends uncertain recordings to an expert for review. Wildlife departments, university ecology groups and birdwatchers survey Pakistan's wetlands, often with paper forms and no signal. The project turns each survey into consistent, checkable data.
Fingernail Photo Anaemia Screening App for Community Health Workers
Build an offline phone app that guides a community health worker to take a fingernail photo with a colour reference card, estimates whether the person is likely to be anaemic and tracks referral for a blood test. Anaemia is common among women and children in South Asia and often goes unnoticed because a blood test means travelling to a lab. The project reproduces a published smartphone method, checks it against a haemoglobin meter with clinical partners and is clear that it screens, not diagnoses.
Distribution Transformer Overload and Hot-Spot Monitor for Power Utilities
Build a clip-on monitor for neighbourhood distribution transformers that measures load current on each phase and oil temperature, estimates the winding hot-spot temperature with the IEEE C57.91 thermal model and reports loss of insulation life. Transformers in South Asian cities burn out every summer under air conditioning load, leaving whole streets without power for days. The monitor tells the utility which transformers are at risk before they fail.
Low-Cost Earthquake Shaking Alarm and Intensity Network for Schools
Build low-cost accelerometer nodes for school buildings that detect the first wave of an earthquake on site, sound an alarm a few seconds before the strongest shaking, and report measured shaking intensity per building to a central map within minutes. Northern Pakistan and the Himalayan belt face high earthquake risk, and schools are among the most vulnerable buildings. Seconds of warning and minutes-fast damage triage both save lives.
Low-Cost Beehive Weight and Temperature Monitor for Migratory Beekeepers
Build a solar-powered hive scale and sensor node that records hive weight, inside temperature and humidity every few minutes, sends data over LoRa to a gateway at the apiary and alerts the beekeeper to swarming, a nectar flow ending, a hive tipped over or a colony losing weight. Beekeepers who move hives between flowering areas cannot inspect every box every day. The core is accurate weighing outdoors and turning weight curves into events.
Low-Cost WBGT Heat Stress Station with Work-Rest Alerts for Outdoor Workers
Build a small, low-cost weather station that estimates wet bulb globe temperature, the standard measure of heat stress, and tells supervisors at construction sites, brick kilns and farms when workers need to rest, drink and seek shade. Temperature alone misses humidity, sun and wind, which together decide how dangerous heat is. The station turns a recognised heat index into simple, timed alerts.
Offline-First Update System for School and Clinic Device Fleets on Poor Connections
Build an update system for fleets of Linux devices in rural schools, clinics or shops, such as Raspberry Pi kiosks or low-cost PCs, where the internet is slow, metered or missing for days. It ships small delta updates, lets one device on a site download once and share with the rest over the local network, accepts updates from a USB stick, and rolls back automatically if a device fails to boot.
IoT Sensor Readings Store with Bucketed Time Series in MongoDB
Build a temperature and humidity monitoring system for vaccine and medicine fridges in small clinics and pharmacies, storing millions of sensor readings in MongoDB. The core of the project is a measured comparison of the hand-built bucket pattern with native time series collections, plus TTL retention and live dashboards built from aggregation pipelines.
