AI API Spend Attribution per Feature and Customer with Budget Guards
AI features have a cost per request that changes with prompt length, model choice and retries, and a single heavy customer or a bug in an agent loop can burn a month's budget in a day. Build a lightweight library and collector that tag every AI call with feature, customer and model, compute cost from token counts, show cost per feature and per customer, detect unusual spend quickly, and enforce budgets before the bill arrives.
Court Cause List and Hearing Date Alerts for Litigants and Small Law Chambers
Missing a hearing date can mean a case is dismissed or delayed for months, yet many litigants and small law chambers still check court cause lists by hand. Build a service that reads publicly published cause lists from a few chosen courts on a schedule, matches them to cases a user is following, and sends reminders the day before. The engineering focus is reliable parsing of inconsistent PDFs and pages, and alerts that never miss a match.
Government Notification Watcher with Plain-Language Summaries and Topic Alerts
Tax notifications, regulatory circulars and gazette notices change rules for small businesses and citizens overnight, but they are published as scanned PDFs on scattered government websites. Build a monitored pipeline that checks chosen official pages on a schedule, detects new documents, extracts text (with OCR when needed), writes a short plain-language summary with the source linked, and alerts subscribers by topic. Treat it as a reliability and cost engineering project.
FOCUS Format Converter for Smaller Cloud Providers and AI API Bills
The FinOps Open Cost and Usage Specification (FOCUS) gives cloud bills a common format, and the big clouds now export it. Startups also pay smaller hosts, AI API providers and SaaS tools whose bills arrive in their own formats. Build converters that turn those bills into valid FOCUS data, a validator, and a dashboard that shows total cost and unit cost (per customer or per feature) across every provider in one place.
Heat Action Plan Alert System with District Thresholds, Voice Messages and Acknowledgements
Cities in South Asia and the Gulf now have heat action plans, but alerts still travel by phone calls and WhatsApp forwards, and nobody knows who received them. Build a multi-channel alert system that reads weather forecasts, applies each district's agreed thresholds, sends staged warnings by SMS, voice call and email to hospitals, schools and field teams in local languages, and tracks acknowledgements and actions taken.
Learned LLM Router That Sends Easy Tasks to Cheap Models, with a Cost-Quality Frontier
Many LLM requests are easy enough for a small, cheap model, and a few need a strong, expensive one. Build a router that learns from your own evaluation data which requests need which model, compare it with simple rules and with always using one model, and plot the cost-quality frontier so a team can pick an operating point. Include cost tracking per request and a fallback when the cheap answer looks weak.
Prompt Change Regression Evals in Pull Requests with Statistical Diffs
Teams change a prompt, swap a model or tweak retrieval and only find out a week later that something broke. Build a GitHub Action that detects AI-related changes in a pull request, runs the affected eval suites against the old and new versions, accounts for the randomness in LLM outputs with repeated runs and confidence intervals, and posts a clear diff of what got better, what got worse, and what it costs.
Load-Shedding-Aware Server Shutdown and Restart Orchestrator for Small Offices
Build a service that watches a small office's UPS or solar inverter battery during power cuts and shuts down servers, virtual machines and containers in the right order before the battery runs out, then brings everything back and checks it is healthy when power returns. Offices in Pakistan running a local server through daily load shedding lose data and hours to dirty shutdowns. This makes each outage boring.
Signed Build Provenance Gate for a Company's Internal Packages and Container Images
Build a gate that lets a small company prove every internal package and container image was built by its own CI from a reviewed commit, and blocks anything that was not. It uses keyless signing from the Sigstore project and SLSA-style provenance, wrapped into a setup a team can adopt in an afternoon. Deployments and installs check the signature and the build record before they proceed.
Alert Noise Analyser and Replay Tool for Small On-Call Teams
Build a tool that collects a team's alert history from Prometheus Alertmanager or Grafana, measures which alerts are noisy (flapping, self-resolving, never acted on, firing at night), groups alerts that fire together into likely single incidents, and replays history against proposed rule changes to show how many pages would be saved without missing real incidents. Small teams burn out on noisy pages. This turns alert tuning from guesswork into evidence.
Cloud Data Transfer Cost Attribution from Flow Logs for Small Teams
Build a tool that reads VPC flow logs and the cost and usage report from an AWS account, works out which service talks to which and over what path (same zone, cross-zone, NAT gateway, internet, cross-region), and attributes data transfer charges to the services and teams that cause them. Small teams see a large data transfer line on the bill and cannot tell where it comes from. The tool turns that line into a ranked list of flows with fixes.
Electricity Slab Tracker App That Warns Before You Lose the Protected Tariff
Build a mobile app where households enter their meter reading every few days and see how many units they will use by the end of the billing cycle, the estimated bill and how close they are to the next tariff slab. In Pakistan, crossing the 200-unit protected threshold in one month can raise bills for months afterwards. The app turns occasional meter readings into a forecast and timely warnings, with the tariff rules kept as editable data.
School Hearing Screening App with Ambient Noise Monitoring and Referral Tracking
Build an Android app that lets a school nurse or trained teacher run a pure-tone hearing screen with calibrated headphones, refuses to test when the room is too noisy, catches children who tap at random and tracks referrals to an audiologist. Many children with hearing loss in Pakistan are never screened and are seen as inattentive in class. The project follows a published smartphone screening method and checks its results against an audiologist's tests.
Video-Observed TB Treatment App with Offline Upload for Patients and Treatment Supporters
Build an Android app that lets a tuberculosis patient record a short video of taking each day's medicine, stores it encrypted, uploads it when there is signal and lets a treatment supporter review doses and follow up on missed ones. Daily in-person observation is hard for patients who work, live far from a clinic or have to travel. The project follows the model of a published randomised trial and focuses on making it work on cheap phones and poor connections.
Flaky Test Detector for GitHub Actions That Uses Change Coverage Instead of Reruns
Build a CI tool that decides whether a failing test is flaky without rerunning it, by checking whether the failing test executed any of the code the commit changed. A test that fails without touching the change is almost certainly flaky. The tool labels failures on pull requests, tracks flaky tests over time and saves the CI minutes that blanket reruns waste.
Kubernetes Network Policy Generator With Pre-Apply Connectivity Tests to Stop Lateral Movement
Build a tool that watches which services in a Kubernetes cluster actually talk to each other, generates least-connection network policies from that traffic, and tests them in CI against the expected connectivity before they are applied, so nothing legitimate breaks. Most clusters run with no network policies at all, which lets an attacker who breaks into one pod reach every database and internal API. This makes locking them down safe enough to actually do.
Log Volume Cost Reducer With Pattern Mining for Self-Hosted Loki and Vector Pipelines
Build a tool that groups a company's logs into templates using log parsing algorithms, finds the noisy patterns nobody ever searches, and generates sampling and drop rules for the log pipeline. Teams running Grafana Loki or sending logs to a paid service often find that a handful of chatty patterns make up most of the volume. The tool shows the savings before anything changes and keeps rare and error logs intact.
Helm Chart Permission Analyser That Finds Kubernetes Cluster Takeover Paths Before Install
Build a tool that reads a Helm chart before it is installed and works out whether the permissions it grants could let an attacker who compromises one of its pods take over the whole cluster. Many third-party operators and add-ons ask for far more access than they need. The analyser explains each dangerous permission, the attack path it opens and a narrower alternative.
Terraform Plan Blast Radius Reviewer That Explains Risky Infrastructure Changes on Pull Requests
Build a pull request bot that reads the machine-readable output of terraform plan or tofu plan and explains in plain language what could go wrong: a database that will be replaced and lose data, a security group opened to the internet, an IAM policy that grew from read to admin. Reviewers stop approving 400-line plans they never read. High-risk changes need an extra approval.
Multi-Model LLM Serving With Scale to Zero on a Few Shared GPUs
Build a serving layer that lets a university lab or small company host many open language models and fine-tuned adapters on two to four GPUs, loading each model when requests arrive and unloading idle ones. The research focus is cold start: loading a model in seconds rather than minutes using local checkpoint caching, a fast loading format and smart placement. Teams get many models without paying for a GPU per model.
Fair-Share GPU Scheduler for University Lab Workstations and Student Projects
Build a lightweight job scheduler for a university department's handful of GPU workstations, where students currently book GPUs on a spreadsheet or log in and fight over them. Students submit containerised training jobs; the scheduler queues them, shares GPUs fairly across groups, checkpoints and pauses long jobs to let short ones through, and reports who used what. It is far simpler to run than Slurm.
Offline-First Update System for School and Clinic Device Fleets on Poor Connections
Build an update system for fleets of Linux devices in rural schools, clinics or shops, such as Raspberry Pi kiosks or low-cost PCs, where the internet is slow, metered or missing for days. It ships small delta updates, lets one device on a site download once and share with the rest over the local network, accepts updates from a USB stick, and rolls back automatically if a device fails to boot.
Container Image Slimming and Vulnerability Diff Report in CI, Verified by Your Own Tests
Build a CI step that takes an application's container image, produces a slimmed version that keeps only the files the app actually uses, runs the project's own tests against the slim image to prove nothing broke, and reports the size saved and the known vulnerabilities removed. Teams get smaller, safer images without hand-tuning Dockerfiles, and a clear report they can trust.
Student Cloud Sandboxes with Budgets and Automatic Cleanup for University Labs
Build a system that gives every student in a cloud computing course their own sandbox on AWS, Azure or Google Cloud, with a budget, least-privilege access, required tags and nightly clean-up of anything left running, plus a lecturer dashboard. A beginner-to-intermediate cloud and DevOps final year project that solves a problem every university lab has: surprise bills and forgotten resources.
