AI agents and MCP

Stage 1 · Lesson 4 of 6

Ground truth from the environment

How agents work

get things wrong, so the ones that work check their progress against real results after each action. That feedback is called ground truth: a test run that passes or fails, an API response, a row read back from the database, a confirmation number from a booking system.

A coding agent that runs the tests after every edit notices its own mistakes. A booking agent that reads back the confirmed slot catches a failed booking before telling the user it worked. When you design an agent, ask what evidence each step can return and make sure your tools return it.

Common trapan agent that only reasons in text and assumes its actions succeeded, drifting further from reality with every step while sounding completely confident.
