How the course is structured

The course is split into units, each designed to take about a week at 3 to 4 hours of work:

• Unit 0, onboarding: setting up your tools and accounts.
• Unit 1, agent fundamentals: what an agent is, how tools and actions work, the thought, action, observation loop, and a first agent built with smolagents.
• Unit 2, frameworks: the same ideas implemented in smolagents, LangGraph and LlamaIndex, so you see how each library shapes the design.
• Unit 3, use cases: applying agents to realistic tasks.
• Unit 4, final assignment: build an agent, run it against a benchmark and compare your score on a student leaderboard.

Bonus units cover fine-tuning a model for function calling, agent observability and evaluation, and agents that play games.

Certificates and cost

Everything, including certification, is free, and there is no deadline. There are two certificates: a fundamentals certificate for completing Unit 1, and a completion certificate for Unit 1, one use case assignment and the final challenge. You can also audit without signing up for anything.

Before you start

You need basic Python and a rough idea of what an LLM is; Unit 1 includes a refresher on the second. You will want a free Hugging Face account. Some exercises call hosted models, so read the setup notes on inference options and any usage limits before you start the notebooks.

Getting the most out of it

• Do not skip Unit 1. The thought, action, observation loop is the idea that everything else builds on, and understanding it makes every framework easier to read.
• Pick one framework to go deep on. Seeing three is useful for comparison, but by the end of Unit 2 choose the one that fits your work and rebuild a small agent in it from scratch.
• Treat the final assignment as the test. It is where you find out whether your agent really works on tasks you did not design, which is the difference between understanding agents and having followed a tutorial.
• Log every run. Once agents take multiple steps, reading the trace is how you debug. The observability bonus unit is worth doing for that reason.

Microsoft's AI Agents for Beginners covers design patterns in shorter lessons, and LangChain Academy's Introduction to LangGraph goes further on state and human approval. Once something works, the Agents Towards Production tutorials deal with deployment, memory and monitoring.

Common questions

How long does it really take? Hugging Face designs each unit as a week at 3 to 4 hours. Most people finish the core units in three to five weeks alongside study or work; there is no deadline.

Is the certificate worth anything? It is free and shows you completed a graded project, which is modest but real. The agent you build is the more convincing thing to show.

Do I need to pay for model access? The course is designed around free options, though usage limits on hosted inference can apply. Read the setup notes early so you are not blocked mid-unit.
