AI agents and MCP

Stage 1 · Lesson 5 of 6

When not to build an agent

How agents work

Before building, run a four-question test. Is the task multi-step and hard to specify in advance? Is the outcome valuable enough to justify extra cost and waiting time?

Can current models actually do it, which you check with a quick manual trial? Can mistakes be caught and undone, through tests, review or a rollback? If any answer is no, a single model call or a workflow will serve users better.

Irreversible actions deserve special care: sending money, deleting data or emailing customers should wait until you have evals, limits and a human approval step, all covered later in this roadmap.

Common trapletting a new take irreversible actions on day one, because the demo worked on five friendly examples.
