Stage 9 · Lesson 1 of 5
Why skills fade with AI help
Skills form through effort: recalling syntax, getting stuck, reasoning through an error. When a tool fills every gap instantly, you get the code but skip the effort, and the skill never forms or slowly fades. A 2026 randomised study by found developers learning a new library with AI help scored noticeably lower on a follow-up quiz than those who coded by hand, with little time saved.
Those who used AI to ask conceptual questions, or asked for explanations alongside code, kept more of what they learned. The lesson is not to avoid AI but to use it in ways that keep you thinking. This matters most early in your career, when the fundamentals are still forming.
Common trapfeeling productive every day while your ability to work without the tool quietly drops.
A question to check yourself, an AI practice session and 1 cheat sheet entry come when you add the roadmap to your account. Add it
