Switch into tech

Stage 4 · Lesson 3 of 7

Free versus paid learning

A learning plan that fits your life

When you weigh , start with one fact: most beginner material for most tech roles is free and good. Paying buys other things. It can buy structure and deadlines, feedback from people, a (a group who learn together), a certificate, and sometimes career support.

Those can be worth it. But only once you know the field suits you, and you know exactly what the payment buys. A good rule is to learn free for at least a month first.

If money is tight, look for on course platforms, employer training budgets, and local government or programmes.

Common trappaying up front to feel committed, which often turns into guilt rather than progress when the course turns out not to fit.
