Stage 2 · Lesson 3 of 8
Regions and availability zones
A is a geographic area, such as a city or country, where the runs data centres. Inside most regions are zones: separate data centres with their own power and networking, close enough to be linked quickly. Your choice of region sets to your users, prices, data residency and which services you can use.
Spreading an app across two or more zones lets it survive one data centre failing. Pick the region nearest your users that has the services you need, and use it consistently while learning.
Common trapbuilding in whatever default region the chose, far from your users, or putting every server in one zone and calling it highly available.
