Data analytics

Stage 1 · Lesson 2 of 6

Asking the right business question

How analysts think

Most requests arrive vague: "Can you look at sales?" Before touching any data, turn it into a specific question tied to a decision. Ask who is asking and what they will do with the answer.

Ask which number matters, for which period, and compared with what. sounds like this: "Did the June discount increase repeat orders among new customers, compared with May?" Now you know exactly which data you need, and when you are done.

This step shapes everything after it. The question decides how you define your metrics, what your pulls and which chart you draw.

Common trapstarting to query straight away, spending two days answering a question the never asked, or never agreeing what "done" looks like.

A question to check yourself, an AI practice session and 1 cheat sheet entry come with the full roadmap. Unlock
