roadmap.sh: BI Analyst
A free, interactive map of what a business intelligence analyst works with: business metrics, SQL, data warehousing and modelling, BI tools, dashboards and communicating with stakeholders. A good companion if you are aiming at reporting and dashboard roles with Power BI or Tableau.

What it is
roadmap.sh is a community-driven, open source site of visual learning paths. Its BI Analyst roadmap focuses on business intelligence work: understanding what the business needs, defining metrics and KPIs, getting data out of databases with SQL, how data warehouses and star schemas are organised, ETL and data quality, building reports and dashboards in BI tools, and presenting results to people who make decisions. Each node opens a short explanation with links to go deeper.
How it differs from the Data Analyst roadmap
The Data Analyst roadmap is broader across analysis methods and programming. The BI Analyst roadmap is narrower and more practical for one kind of job: the analyst who owns recurring reports and dashboards for a business team. If your target roles mention Power BI, Tableau, Looker, "reporting" or "dashboards" more than Python, this map is closer to what you will be asked to do.
How to use it well
- Use it as a checklist, not a syllabus. Mark what you can already do on real data.
- Pay special attention to the modelling and warehousing sections. Many learners jump straight to charts, and then struggle when their numbers do not add up because the model is wrong.
- Use the stakeholder and communication nodes as a reminder that a BI analyst is judged on whether people trust and use the report, not on how many visuals it has.
Progress tracking is free with a roadmap.sh account.
Is it worth your time?
Yes, as a map of the job. It names topics, such as slowly changing dimensions or data governance, that you will hear in a first BI role and that courses often skip. It is not a course, and it does not replace hands-on practice in one BI tool. Some advanced nodes describe work that senior BI developers or analytics engineers do, so do not treat every node as a requirement for a first job.
Time needed
An hour to skim. The core, which is SQL, metrics, modelling basics, one BI tool and a couple of portfolio dashboards, is a few months of part-time study for most people.
Common questions
Do I need to learn data warehousing tools? Not at first. Understand what facts, dimensions and a star schema are; you will use them in Power BI or Tableau straight away.
Is it free? Yes, the roadmaps are free.

Stuck on something specific?
Writing only gets you so far. If you want an answer to your situation rather than the general case, book a session and we will work through it together. Sessions are free for approved Sefism members, and a few slots open each week.
