Stage 2 · Lesson 1 of 8

Blueprints first

Programming for games

are Unreal's system. Instead of typing code, you connect boxes (nodes) with wires. Events such as BeginPlay (when play starts), Tick (every frame) or an connect to functions, variables, branches and loops.

Start here, because you learn the engine's way of thinking without waiting for C++ to compile. Many shipped games use Blueprints heavily. Learn Blueprint classes, variables with the setting, functions and macros, and how to follow the flow of execution along the wires.

Keep graphs tidy with functions and comments. Later in this stage you move complex or performance-sensitive systems to C++ and make them available to Blueprints.

Common trapone enormous of crossing wires that nobody, including you in two weeks, can read.
