Masters and scholarships abroad

Stage 3 · Lesson 8 of 9

Advertised PhD positions

Choose programmes and supervisors

In much of Europe, and increasingly elsewhere, many are advertised positions. are funded projects with a named and a closing date. They often come with a salary and an employment contract.

You apply to the position, not only to a programme. Portals such as EURAXESS and FindAPhD list them, and university job pages carry more. Read the project description carefully.

Check that the funding covers you as an international applicant, and tailor your application to the project. Structured programmes in the United States work differently. You apply to a department, then rotate between labs or choose an adviser later. Funding comes through or (paid teaching or research work).

Common trapignoring advertised positions because they look like jobs, or applying to projects whose funding excludes international applicants.
