TOEFL iBT
is the academic English test from , widely accepted in the United States and elsewhere. ETS changed it in January 2026. It is now shorter, about two hours, and adaptive, meaning questions get harder or easier based on your answers.
Scores are now reported on a 1 to 6 scale. During a two-year transition, a comparable 0 to 120 score is shown alongside. Programmes may state requirements on either scale for a while, so check which one they use.
, how long a result counts, is usually two years. Practise with the official materials for the new format, not old books written for the previous test.
Common trappreparing with outdated material, or assuming an old score requirement of, say, 90 maps obviously onto the new scale without checking the programme's current page.
