What it is
PTE Academic, the Pearson Test of English Academic, is a single sitting of about two hours that tests speaking, writing, reading and listening, fully on computer and scored by automated systems. As of 2026-09 Pearson says results typically arrive in about two days, that it is accepted for study by more than 4,000 universities and colleges, and that scores are valid for two years.
Versions
For study, the standard PTE Academic is the one most universities ask for. Pearson also offers PTE Academic UKVI for some UK visa purposes. As of 2026-09 Pearson's guidance says that for UK degree study at universities you normally use PTE Academic, while the UKVI version is for UK work visas and study below degree level. Always follow your university's instructions and the gov.uk list of approved tests.
Who it is for
Applicants who want fast results and a fully computer-based format, and who have confirmed that all their programmes and their visa route accept it. It is widely used for Australia, and many UK, Canadian, European and US universities accept it too, but acceptance is not universal.
How to prepare
- Read the official task descriptions: some tasks, such as reading aloud and repeating sentences, combine skills in ways other tests do not.
- Use official practice tests to get used to the format and the timing.
- Practise speaking clearly at a steady pace, because the scoring is automated.
- Book with time for a retake before your deadline.
Is it worth it?
It is a good option where accepted, particularly when you need results quickly. The downside is that the format is unusual, so candidates who prepare only with general English practice can be surprised. Check acceptance first; a fast score is worthless for a programme that does not accept it.

The test fee is set by country; select your location on the official site to see the price. Pearson offers some free practice materials, and paid official practice tests.

Is it accepted in the United States? By many universities, but not all. Check each programme.
Is it the same as PTE Academic UKVI? No. They are separate bookings. Use the one your route asks for.
