Stage 1 · Lesson 7 of 7
Reading other people's code
Professional engineers read far more code than they write, yet students almost never practise reading it. Once a week, open one well-written file from an project (free code that anyone can read) in your language. A small or a helper module from a popular library works well.
Work out what it does before you read the comments. Notice how functions are named, how errors are handled and how the file is organised, and write down one idea worth copying. This prepares you for joining a team's codebase in an , and for later, when you read a friend's changes and comment on them.
Common trappicking something huge like the core of a web : start with files under 300 lines.
