Stage 1 · Lesson 2 of 7
Why companies really cut jobs
Layoffs usually have several causes at once. Many companies hired fast in 2020 and 2021 when money was cheap, then cut when interest rates rose. reward lower costs and higher profit per employee.
Since 2024, a new reason has grown: companies are spending huge sums on AI and chips, and cutting staff elsewhere to pay for it. Oracle said in a 2026 filing that adopting AI had reduced, and may keep reducing, its workforce. Others remove layers of management: Google said in 2025 it had a third fewer managers of small teams than a year earlier.
Some cuts are about performance, as when Meta said in 2025 it would "move out low-performers faster".
Common trapassuming every layoff has one simple cause, or that it is a verdict on the people who were cut.
