Routing between VLANs

Switching and VLANs

Devices in different VLANs are in different , so they need a to talk. There are two common designs. A routes internally with one SVI (switch virtual interface, such as interface Vlan20) per VLAN, each holding that VLAN's gateway address; this is what most campus networks use.

A router can instead use one trunk link split into tagged , one per VLAN, known as router on a stick, which is common in labs and small sites. Either way, every host's is the SVI or subinterface address for its VLAN. Test by pinging across VLANs and tracing the path.

Common trapforgetting ip routing on a Layer 3 switch: the SVIs come up and answer pings, but nothing is routed between them.
